Final Draft

President Bush’s Emergency Plan

The Peace Corps is a large organization that helps out third world countries. This organization is determined to help in places where resources, such as food and water, are not always available. The lack of hygiene and health care is a major problem that isn’t being taken care of by their own government. Because of this, the US sends our people in hopes that we can make a difference. Since HIV/AIDS has become a widespread epidemic, the Peace Corps made this their main area of concern. So to fix this, president Bush decided to make an emergency plan to attend to this epidemic. Thus PRPFAR, or president plan for aids relief, was born.
So what exactly is PRPFAR doing for aids relief? Well Bush is giving fifteen billon dollars to fight this disease in other countries. So now the question is, where did Bush get this money to support his cause? Well don’t think for a second that it came from his paycheck or pocket. The money to support this is from the great tax payers of America. So now, us Americans are not only giving money to support our country, but another country? Don’t get me wrong, I believe the main reason for starting this plan was good intentions, but as always the government went overboard.
My issues with Bush’s plan started at the beginning. Where did they got their money to support their plan? When our country is at war, jobs are hard to come by, and we are in a recession, giving billons of dollars away just seems like a bad time considering our country’s state. Why now, did our government decide to give billons of dollars away? Don’t think for a second that we didn’t know for a long time about this epidemic going on. This is been a big problem for a long time and for some reason president Bush thought it was a necessary time to start assessing the issue. It’s not as if Americans are suffering from anything, oh wait we are. Americans are having a difficult time paying bills and putting food on the table. Also, in these third world countries we’re helping, one dollar can last them up to a week. So why is the plan calling for fifteen billon? Where is all that money going to because that country isn’t getting it. They say that they teach abstinence, being faithful, and the use of condoms; none of which is costly. And how much could it cost to set up red cross health clinics? Not billons of dollars in a country where a dollar can go far on just a buck. So do I think now was the time to start this plan against aids? No, it should have been started years ago before it became an epidemic.
Another problem I have with PRPFAR is that its so hard for Americans to get a decent health care plan from our government, but yet their willing to support other countries health care. It is good to help others, and aids is a horrible problem going on that needs to be taken care of. But isn’t it the job of our government to support its own country first so we can better help others?
And finally, I feel that PRPFAR should have thought of a better way to help out. Instead of America giving a large amount in a time where money is hard to come by, PRPFAR should have looked after Canada or/and Other “friends” of the US to help support this big cause. The US alone is supporting care for over 10.1 million, which is a lot for one country. If not only the US but other countries helped out with this cause, more money could be put towards the emergency plan for aids relief. Another plus would be that the plan wouldn’t be dependant on just one country, and that one giving an enormous amount.
President Bush’s emergency plan, or PRPFAR, is giving fifteen billon dollars to other countries, instead of supporting its own country’s health care problems. Our government would rather help other people than its own? I do support helping other third world places, but it makes more sense to help when there is more money to give, unlike at a time of war and recession. So do I agree with this plan? No, we should have helped years ago before it became an epidemic, and when we had more money to give.

Analytical Research, Digital Comp, or Opinion Editorial?

At the start, i had to write an analytical reasearch paper. Since it wasn’t that long ago, i wrote a research paper for my senior year, i figured it wouldn’t be so bad. Well, i forgot about the analytical part and just wrote a very long paper with tons of facts. It was harder than i had thought to write in the end, especially when i had to go back and fix so it was an analytical paper. I really didn’t like doing the analytical paper in the end. Next we moved on in class to digital composition. I really like doing these types of assignments. I’m not good with anyting electronic and was a little afraid about it, but i’m having fun now and geting through well. I just hope everything posted right and i get a good grade, then i’ll really be happy about it! The final paper we did in class was an opinion editoral, or op-ed. I didn’t know what to expect at first, but i liked the word count and seemed short, which i liked. I also really liked doing this assignment after i started. It was nice to say what i wanted. I tried to write a well thought out and somehwat funny paper. I don’t expect anyone to laugh but maybe enjoy reading it over some other papers. I would have to say that the op-ed was my favorite thing we did all year.

Do I Agree, Or Not?

After reading my op-ed, I agree with the writer in say that not only is China’s food unsafe, so is our American food as well. In China harmful chemicals are getting into the food supply. One way is from the farmers giving their animals feed with this harmful chemical in it, which then is sent to food markets. Another way this is leaking into the food, is from manufactures using this product in things such as baby food because it is cheaper and they can make a profit off it and the test can’t detect this toxin. Even though China is having a large problem with this so is America. America make tons of this chemical because it is used in many cleaning products. Companies in America also use this chemical to make fertilizer. And farmers use this when farming, thus ending up in our food goods too. The writer had a good argument that Americans have just as much of a problem with this chemical as China, but China’s problem is more heard of. America is doing a better job of keeping under the radar. Since all these facts are true and given in the op-ed, the writer does persuade me to take his side and say China isn’t the only one’s with this problem.

rules and conventions of writing for different genres

While writing a research paper, one expresses their information collected in a formal way. On the other hand, op-ed writing tends to have a style that sounds like a person is talking to you outside the classroom setting. Op-ed can although be very informative, it doesn’t have the same flow as a formal research paper. For instance in my op-ed story the writer wrote, “So, sure, let’s keep the heat on China. And, yes, let’s take with a big dose of skepticism the Chinese government’s assurances that they’re improving the food supply.” As you can tell from this example, op-ed writing has a more conversational flow. This doesn’t make the op-ed writing have less of an impact on the readers, but op-ed’s may be easier to follow than a more formal piece of writing like a research paper.

The Peace Corps and HIV/AIDS

In many countries, HIV/AIDS is a major epidemic that continues to kill many people. Due to the lack of information and technology, people from these third world countries are still infecting others. Volunteers work with children and adults to teach them more about this disease. Volunteers also work with to establish health clinics. The Bush emergency plan gives the Peace Corps around fifteen billion dollars to help support this movement. This funding causes Americans to be upset, due to the fact that America is already in hardship for money.
